The City Council, through the creation of the Economic Development Commission, has made the recruitment and retention of industry their top priority. In fact, for the past three years, Monroe and the other communities that make up the Charlotte Region have been recognized by Fortune Magazine as #1 in "pro-business" attitude. Being adjacent to the 2^nd largest financial center in the United States and proactively pursuing the growth and development of high-technology businesses, the City of Monroe has become a significant player in the many new growth sectors.

With North Carolina reputation for possessing the most productive workforce in the nation, Monroe’s economy continues to show impressive gains. However, it is important to recognize that the prosperity of the City of Monroe is due to its diverse industrial base - from Fuel Cells and New Age Medical Technologies to Traditional Manufacturing in Metals and Food Processing. Our City Council, recognizing the need to be aggressive in business retention and recruitment, created one of the first incentive policies within the region to attract business. "Monroe is Good for Business" has been the attitude toward the industrial sector and has been the key factor in the location of many national and international headquarters.

The City of Monroe Electric Division is continuing to remain innovative in rate structures and services provided. The City of Monroe has been able to place in existence more peak-shaving generation than all the other municipal run utilities in the State of North Carolina combined.
