Monroe is a City preparing for the future while preserving the best of its past. Established in 1844 and named the seat government for Union County, Monroe has consistently made improvements that have formed a community that supports economic growth and development. Companies are taking advantage of the area’s hardworking, educated workforce, the ease of access to their markets, and a pro-business environment unmatched in the Region.
Located centrally along the Eastern United States, Monroe has access to 57% of the US population within a 650-mile radius. From this vantage point, a company is able to gain access to over 140 million people in a mere two hours by plane and one-day by vehicle. With only seven miles separating the City limits of Monroe and Charlotte, one has virtually instant access to the hub of the sixth largest trading region in the US that expands to nearly 150-miles and encompassing 11.8 million people.
Our community possesses a diverse and skilled workforce, ranging from business executives to engineers and from manufacturing technicians to entry-level workers. This diversity allows our local economy to be stable throughout the rise and fall of the business cycle. The best example of this stability is the fact that approximately 35% of the workforce is employed in the manufacturing sector. The technical and specialty skills needed to maintain this healthy percentage are provided through South Piedmont Community College, Wingate University and the Central Academy of Technology and Arts. The broad array of skill sets allows our community to manufacture products for the following sectors: Aerospace/Aviation, Automotive, Medical, Specialty Metals/Super Alloys, Life Safety, Plastics, and Food Processing.
Monroe’s location is the envy of many other areas of the country. It boasts a mild climate with four distinct seasons that welcome year-round enjoyment of the outdoors. There is also diversity in the wonders of nature one can enjoy, with easy access to the Blue Ridge Mountains less than two-hours west, the famed Carolina Beaches just three-hours to the east, and numerous local opportunities to boat, fish, golf, bike, run, or just read in a park.
The close proximity to Charlotte allows one to enjoy professional sports:
